Times have changed, and for the recent wave of young Drill artists, the rose that grows from concrete is now more thorn than bud. This is both one of Drill rap’s greatest assets and, some would say, simultaneously a significant liability. What is undeniable is the power pulsating through its pounding rhythms. The elements and energies which constitute these tunes go far beyond mere optics. In the midst of backlash and arguments over alleged propagation of violence, Drill artists have been marginalized by mainstream’s traditional outlets. Nevertheless, these self-made entrepreneurs have hacked their own path with rapid-fire lyrics, sparse beats and the boom of relentless basslines. There is no telling what Drill will achieve if given the proper room to breathe. Oftentimes, within perceived ugliness, therein lies visions of beauty and wonder; of triumph over tragedy.
